There is power in numbers, this is true. But there is also power in one. One seed can yield a tree. One word can end an argument. One decision can change the course of a family’s legacy.
One person saying yes to Jesus Christ can set in motion the spread of the gospel and the growth of the church in an entire region. One person.
Though Epaenetus is mentioned only once in the Bible, his legacy is amazing. He was the first convert in the province of Asia (not the continent of modern times, but of significant size and population nonetheless).
Can you imagine what it must have been like to be the one and only believer in his homeland? Was he ridiculed? Shunned? Even persecuted? Or, was he respected? Did people want to hear what he had to say? Were they drawn to the new faith he lived out?
Rather than speculate the details, we can be certain of this: God began His widespread work in that part of the world through one person.
Say yes to God, even if you are the only one who does.
“Greet my beloved Epaenetus,
who was the first convert to Christ in Asia.”
(Romans 16:5 ESV)
