The Whispering Assault on God’s Lovingkindness
by Bill Elliff
The Great Liar is relentless in his assault on the One whose throne he longs to dispossess.
We were designed to praise God—to give Him glory in the highest order. To abort that and to continue to use us for his devious schemes, Satan wages a relentless assault on our thinking about God’s character.
“God is not loving, and He certainly is not kind,” he whispers at every dark moment in our brief, earthly experience. “If He loved you, He would not have allowed this to happen to you or to those you love.”
He never misses an opportunity to defame God.
Unthinking Reserve
If we are not wise, we will not recognize the source of these thoughts, and we will blindly follow him in unbelief. A creeping mistrust will slide in like a morning fog over our hearts.
Doubts will arise as to God’s goodness, and we will find ourselves unwilling to surrender to this God we now question. (Why would you give yourself to One you did not think had your best interest at heart?)
Unwavering Truth
But this is the purpose of the Bible. It records for all time the truth about God, the righteous agenda behind all His ways. It stands by your favorite chair like a sentinel, waiting at every moment to defend the Father, to speak the truth about the lovingkindness of our God.
The Spirit calls to us in the middle of the night to open the pages He authored and hear the testimony of millions who have discovered the truth about the Father. Abraham and Moses, Ruth, Esther, and Mary Magdalene, Peter and Paul all shout to us.
They remind us that the God who loves us is weaving the worst of our experiences into a tapestry filled with brilliant threads of His redeeming power … that even the hardest moments, when rightly understood, are conforming us into the image of His dear Son.
And they beckon us to sink in glad surrender into His arms.
David’s Testimony
David saw this, and it repeatedly strengthened his soul and corrected his steps in the midst of darkness. And if we will listen to this second greatest king in human history, we will rise in faith with him.
Because of his strength I will watch for You, for God is my stronghold. My God in His lovingkindness will meet me; God will let me look triumphantly upon my foes….
But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning, for You have been my stronghold and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my strength, I will sing praises to You; for God is my stronghold; the God who shows me lovingkindness” (Psalm 59:9-10, 16-17 NASB).
Perhaps you’re reading this right now because God wants you to recognize the whispers of the Enemy and the reality of God.
Be wise. Do not let this moment pass without recognizing the diabolical source of every doubt you feel rising in your soul, the whispers you’re hearing. Do not let them take root in your mind. Resist the Enemy, and he will flee from you.
And then relax in God’s goodness. He is not only loving in all His works toward You; He is exceedingly and perfectly and eternally kind.
