Job the wealthy landowner and Paul the bi-vocational itinerant preacher came to the same conclusion about accumulating riches.

Job: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return” (Job 1:21).

Paul: “We brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world” (1 Timothy 6:7).

It seems they both found contentment through laying up treasure in heaven. It wasn’t that these men lacked the drive to work and earn, but that they saw the futility of giving one’s life to stuff they didn’t have on their DOB and wouldn’t have on their DOD.

Eventually, all men and women of God must choose what they treasure. Whether rich, poor, or somewhere in between (as far as earthbound assets are concerned), it will be those who find contentment in godliness and not in gold who will be richly rewarded.

Godliness with contentment is great gain,
for we brought nothing into the world,
and we cannot take anything out of the world.
But if we have food and clothing,
with these we will be content.
(1 Timothy 6:6–8 ESV)
