What is the Gospel?
How it works…
The Gospel is all about new life and fresh starts – and when Jesus announced it, he said, “Repent!” That means to turn around, to change your mind, to look at life a new way, and to leave your old life behind. Jesus empowers us to make this change, to walk away from selfishness and toward a life of love, as we say YES to Him.
The most famous verse of the Bible, John 3:16, says that “God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” Jesus died on the Cross to pay the penalty for our sins, so that we could be offered forgiveness and transformation. Then, Jesus conquered our greatest enemy when He rose from the dead! This opened the door for us to have a new, eternal relationship with God.
When Jesus invited people to follow Him, He didn’t ask them to clean up their lives ahead of time, or to go through a lot of religious rituals. Rather, he invited people to simply become a learner (a disciple) – to start lining up with His priorities, His teachings, His way of life. The four gospels in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) contain the teachings of Jesus, and they are a great place to begin learning about the next steps we can take.
